Durango Area Tourism Office Sponsors Outdoor Adventure Quest

Statewide app-based adventure challenge highlights Durango’s mountain-sport culture

Durango, Colo. – (February 28, 2017) – The Durango Area Tourism Office (DATO) is thrilled to offer its support to Outdoor Adventure Quest, a three-day, app-powered BUILD-YOUR-OWN adventure challenge statewide in Colorado this summer.

This new and incredibly unique adventure event encompasses 12 outdoor sport categories, and more than 500 outdoor challenges across the state of Colorado. Teams of two to six participants, aka “Questers”, compete for points and track their progress through the free OAQ app, available on iTunes and Google Play. The Colorado Quest takes place July 14th – 16th and allows Questers to start and end anywhere in the state. Challenge tasks are released only two days before the event, leaving the Questers to some heavy planning. Questers have three days to accomplish as many tasks as possible to win epic gear packages from Quest sponsors.

“We love the creativity and innovation Outdoor Adventure Quest brings to adventure racing,” says Bob Kunkel, executive director with DATO. “It offers something for everyone, not just elite athletes, and all of the promotion is done through user generated content. Brilliant.”

Durango is featured as a key outdoor recreation area for the statewide Colorado Outdoor Adventure Quest, with some of the most activities and opportunities to accumulate points in Quest categories, including: hike, bike, climb, camp, brewery, run, outdoor education, raft/paddle, alternative outdoorsman, extreme sports and hot springs. Participants are encouraged to travel throughout the state, promoting in-state exploration and providing exposure from the remote reaches of the San Juans to Steamboat, the Front Range, Rockies and everything in between.

“The outdoor racing market has long been saturated with obstacle courses and standard race formats for some time,” says Lindsey Beres, founder of Outdoor Adventure Quest. “While beer gardens and bands are a great time, Outdoor Adventure Quest was born from a desire to create something unique and engaging for the general outdoor enthusiast living anywhere in a state, metro or mountain town! Rather than shunning technology in the outdoors, the millennials that join our Quest embrace the technology that allows them to go new places and try new activities.”

Additionally OAQ and DATO are calling for athlete ambassadors to join OAQ and represent Durango. Interested parties can apply online at www.durango.pgtb.me/k6TVpV.

The Durango area is Southwest Colorado’s premier four-season destination, attracting more than one million visitors annually. Please contact Theresa Blake for media inquiries, or visit www.durango.org for more information.
